Brain Wave Entrainment Technology
Brain wave entrainment is a technology that is constantly being developed.
I will do my best to explain the concepts behind entrainment, and to include links to relevant resources for these technologies. I will also provide links to audio software for your use to record your own entrainment recordings.
In earlier pages on this website, discussion and ideas have been presented regarding different forms of relaxation and meditation.
I will briefly discuss in a little more detail, different ways that audio can be used to relax the mind.
As I have mentioned earlier,
on the brain and sound page,
binaural beats are sounds that the brain interprets when two different frequencies are fed to each ear, as an example, 150 HZ in one ear, and 180 Hz in the other ear.
The result is a binaural beat of 30 Hz, that is picked up by the brain, due to the difference in the oscillations. This is sometimes referred to as the third beat.
A resonant entrainment is a little different- when one oscillating device is brought into close contact with another oscillating device, the vibration of the oscillations can cause the other device to resonate as well.
This can be extended to the way the brain works with sound processing.
Audio or sounds can also be mixed with different forms of noise, like pink noise, or white noise.
Pink noise is a distribution of all the frequencies across the auditory spectrum, at the same level.
Audio recorded in this way, with beats of a binaural nature can be used in many ways, to relax, to ease the mind, and also to help with learning, as a few examples.
Naturally, for this technology to work, it is best to be in a state where you are readying yourself to relax, and breathing slowly and deeply. This is my view, and not necessarily applicable to everyone.
It is known that when audio is listened to with binaural beats included in the sound track, that the wave frequency of the brain is changed, and that deeper states of relaxation can be achieved.
This is due to the brain entering into a state of theta waves from beta, or ‘awake’ waves.
To try to explain this further, when individual tones are fed to each ear, the brain hemispheres become synchronised with each other, as each ear is effectively connected to each hemisphere, and the result is that each hemisphere begins to synchronise, or ‘work together’ with the other hemisphere.
In addition to purchasing pre recorded cassettes or CD’s to use the binaural beat technology, there is also a company that develops software that can be loaded onto your computer to customise the entrainment recording to your personal taste.
The benefit of this technique is that you are able to customise your voice, and any music tastes you have to your own specific requirements.
Another benefit of the software, and CD’s from Transparent is that the recordings can be listened to through ordinary speakers, instead of only through headphones. I do, however, recommend that the speaker system be as good as possible (even though the software developer does not say this).
As an audiophile, I have always felt the most accurate reproduction will be the best quality and experience of sound that you can have.
For more information, please click here for Transparent’s website, for information on entrainment
The information above is a guide to entrainment technology, and some of the software that is available to create your own recordings.
I have also included a link, below, that will take you to a website listing the scientific explanation to brain wave synchronization.
It is well written, and easy to understand.
