Imagery, and its role in Relaxation and Meditation

Imagery, or the visualization of a scene in our minds is a practice that is well worth developing, as this is a technique that is often used by the world’s top athletes and other successful people.

It can be used in a number of situations, as below examples show

• Visualization of performance in a sporting event

• Visualization of result for any performance or presentation

• Visualization when using subliminal relaxation techniques, and guided audios

• Goal setting and planning.

A common practice of visualization when we are relaxing is to imagine a safe, comfortable place in our minds- a place that may be by the sea, it may be an isolated garden, or park, or by running water on the edge of a peaceful river. As you can see, the ideas, and images are endless. The idea is that the image be of a peaceful and safe place for you- and it may be as detailed, or bland as you like.

I have found that the more detailed, and colourful the image, the better, as the more detail there is, the stronger the visualization is in your mind.

This sort of visualization is best suited to a time when you are doing your breathing exercises.

However, when you have an important task to complete (I will use the example of an athlete, but this could apply to any situation you choose), it is important to visualize every step of the process in your mind first.

Before you begin your athletic feat, picture the whole performance in your mind, with as much detail as possible. Another example where this may be seen is in the case of golfers.

They think of every move, and the way they will putt the ball, and they practice a swing, before they take the ‘real’ swing.

They are picturing the whole performance in their minds, and this translates into an action for them as they have visualized.

If this is a new concept for you, it may take some practice to prove this, but it does work.

You will notice after some days or weeks of practice, that it becomes a more natural part of your daily routine, and will assist you dramatically to perform, and relax better.

Be the best you can be!
