Procrastination, and ways to overcome it

Procrastination is one of the few traits that can severely hold us from achieving all that we dream about – when taken to it’s highest degree.

The good news is that procrastination can be overcome, by applying small, progressive action steps.

To begin with, procrastination means that things that we don’t really want to do are postponed, or put off entirely!

This is usually a progressive problem that starts off in a small way, and gets worse with time, often as we are ‘running away’ from our responsibilities.

I realize this may seem a little upfront, but please bear with me…

Consider this-

Have you ever (and I’m sure you have) been really excited about something? You couldn’t think about anything else, and you simply zoomed along doing that activity as you were excited about it.

Well, procrastination is the opposite of that! Simple.

Why do we procrastinate?

We may be feeling over whelmed with work responsibilities, or our ‘To Do’ lists may be overflowing.

In cases like these, my recommendation is to break the massive lists into small ‘bite sized chunks’ and simply start with anything, no matter how simple. Even if the tasks are broken into 15 minute ‘sessions’, at least, after that time, something, no matter how small, will be achieved.

With procrastination, the hardest thing is to start. Once we start, things can become progressively easier.

This can be applied to almost anything.

Once we’ve done a little, we can then acknowledge our success, and continue with another task. One bit or bite at a time, and after a few days, a chunk of the ‘to do’ pie can be eaten.

I realize the ideas may seem simplistic, but believe me- the simplest ideas can be the most effective sometimes.
