The Practice of Tai Chi
Many people who practice Tai Chi do so to improve one or more aspects of their health and to stay healthy.
It is not fully known what changes occur in the body during Tai Chi, whether they influence health, and, if so, how.
However, it is generally accepted that Tai Chi offers the ability to exercise, both physically, mentally, and spiritually, in either a lone or group format.
Some people form groups that meet regularly to practice the art of Tai Chi.
The concepts of Tai Chi are to exercise in slow motion, and promote a long life.
It is considered a martial art (soft style) with no aggression, and is believed to balance the mind, as well as promote healing in all areas of the body.
The kineasthetic or proprioception properties of Tai Chi are about balancing neighbouring parts of the body with each other, and in this way, promoting an over all health.
There are many books available on the subject, as well as video and DVD’s that will give you the freedom to practice Tai Chi at home, and then, after greater confidence is achieved, can be practiced in parks, or in places without the guided routine, as by this stage, you will be more confident of the moves, and the feeling of well being that Tai Chi promotes.
What is Tai Chi Made up of?
Tai Chi is made up of three concepts…
There is the exercise and movement of muscles, which increases our over all fitness
There is the spiritual learning from the art form and the practices, and
There is the intellectual study and knowledge of technique.
Tai Chi is said to help us develop a deeper understanding of ourselves, and the way we respond to the world around us.
Learning Tai Chi is like any art form- we start off not being very good at the art, and with time, practice and patience, we improve. This way, our at first jerky movements become smooth, and free flowing.
Finally, as we progress, we learn to appreciate the silence in our minds that is developed from regular practice of the art form.
It is also beneficial to ensure that when you practice Tai Chi, that you are wearing light, comfortable clothing, to ensure that your body is able to allow the free flow of energy through it. Tight clothing can be very restrictive to the benefits of Tai Chi.
Summary
Tai chi is about balance.
We have to balance our lives in every aspect possible, and to allow for as many variables in our life. This way, we are practicing Tai Chi fully, by allowing a balance in our personal life and our working life.
This also applies to balance between our friends and family, and our inner and outer worlds. I think you will understand my point at this stage.
Feel free to look at starting to learn and practice Tai Chi- it is a fantastic, and very beneficial art form.
I wish you all the best-- Be the best you can be!
